Berlenga Islands

Berlenga Islands

A natural reserve in front of our door

Located approximately 10 km in the west of Peniche, the Berlenga Islands consist of the main island Berlenga Grande and the adjoining riffs Estelas and Farilhões. Due to the transparancy of the waters and high concentration of different species the Berlengas are a unique spot where endemic plant species can be found and marine birds choose to nest.

The archipelago of the Berlengas was declared by UNESCO as Natural Reserve in 1981 and World Biosphere Reserve in 2011. On Berlenga Grande is the São João Batista Fortress, a militar fort from the manueline era dating 1502. It is connected with the island through a small bridge. Beautiful small beaches and transparente water make it an ideal spot for diving. You can also take a guided boat tour and explore the wonderful caves that exist on the islands.
